What I meant by helping the team was to help in defense. He, being a forward, always did everything in his power to score goals. That is, as you say, expected of professional football. However, he did not help in defense until this season. His work rate has increased which can be shown by his heatmap, but I did not want to make this article nerdy, so I did not include it.
Also, this was probably due to Conte, who is on the best managers' list. He made Lukaku play good, who was struggling with confidence, stamina and ball control (by his standards, mind you. We would ace regional competitions with even close to his standards.)
It wasn't ever stated in an interview, he just started playing a little deeper role, and then came in to help defense too. As I said, it is visible in the heatmap
